# The HSPT, section by section

The HSPT (High School Placement Test) is a placement test for 8th graders that many Catholic high schools use for admissions, scholarships and course placement. It has five multiple-choice sections with 298 questions in all, and 2 hours 30 minutes of working time. Your child takes it at a high school that gives the test, on a date that school sets. Entrance Lane is writing full-length HSPT practice tests.

## What will an Entrance Lane HSPT practice test include?

- All five sections in the HSPT’s order, with the same number of questions in each.
- A short explanation for every question, so you and your child can go over mistakes together.
- A score summary by section, so you can see which parts need more time before test day.

## What’s on each section of the HSPT?

The HSPT has five sections, and every question is multiple choice. Verbal Skills and Quantitative Skills measure reasoning and together make up the Cognitive Skills score. Reading, Mathematics and Language measure what your child has learned in school and make up the Basic Skills score. Scholastic Testing Service, the HSPT’s publisher, sets a time limit for each section and lists 2 hours 30 minutes of working time in all, but it doesn’t publish the minutes for each section.

| Section | Questions | What it covers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Verbal Skills | 60 | Synonyms, antonyms, analogies, verbal classifications and logic |
| Quantitative Skills | 52 | Number series, number manipulation, and geometric and non-geometric comparisons |
| Reading | 62 | Reading comprehension and vocabulary |
| Mathematics | 64 | Math concepts and problem solving |
| Language | 60 | Punctuation, capitalization, spelling, grammar, usage and composition |
| Total | 298 | 2 hours 30 minutes of working time |

## More about the HSPT

- [Which test does my school use?](https://entrancelane.com/which-test-does-my-school-use): How to tell whether your child needs the HSPT, the ISEE, the SSAT or the SHSAT.

## What does an HSPT practice question look like?

### We’re writing sample questions

Sample questions from each HSPT section, with explanations, will appear here before practice tests open.

## Who takes the HSPT?

Eighth graders applying to high schools that use it. Scholastic Testing Service describes the HSPT as a placement test for 8th graders entering 9th grade, and schools use the scores for admissions, scholarship decisions and course placement. Many Catholic dioceses run the test together for all of their high schools; the [which-test guide](https://entrancelane.com/which-test-does-my-school-use) explains how to check what your child’s school uses.

## How is the HSPT scored?

Each section’s raw score is the number of questions your child answered correctly, with nothing taken away for wrong answers. Raw scores become standard scores from 200 to 800 and percentile ranks from 1 to 99, compared with 8th graders nationally and with the other students tested at that school. The report also groups the sections into a Cognitive Skills total, a Basic Skills total and an overall Battery Composite, and it includes a Cognitive Skills Quotient based on the two reasoning sections and your child’s age.

| Score | Range | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Standard score | 200 to 800 | The section score on a common scale, with 500 as the average |
| Percentile rank | 1 to 99 | The share of students in the comparison group your child scored higher than |
| Cognitive Skills Quotient | 55 to 145 | A reasoning score based on Verbal and Quantitative Skills and age, with 100 as the average |

## When and where does my child take the HSPT?

At a high school that gives it, on the date that school or diocese chooses. Scholastic Testing Service doesn’t set national test dates or register families itself, so the school’s admissions page has the date, the sign-up form and the fee. Scores go to the schools, not to your home.

## Does the HSPT publisher offer official practice?

Scholastic Testing Service sells a short practice booklet, with three questions from each section, and a 7th grade version of the HSPT called the Pre-HSPT. Both are sold to schools rather than families, so ask the school whether it gives either one. The publisher says it isn’t affiliated with outside prep products and doesn’t endorse them, and that includes Entrance Lane.

## Common questions about the HSPT

### Can my child use a calculator on the HSPT?

No. Scholastic Testing Service says calculators aren’t allowed on the Mathematics section, and its manual says they aren’t used on the Quantitative Skills section either under standard testing conditions.

### Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the HSPT?

No. The HSPT counts correct answers only, and Scholastic Testing Service’s own advice is to answer every question and take a best guess when unsure.

### Can my child take the HSPT more than once?

Scholastic Testing Service recommends taking the HSPT only once. A school may allow a retest in unusual circumstances, and that decision belongs to the school.

### How do we register for the HSPT?

Through the high school, not the publisher. Schools and dioceses order the test, set their own dates and collect their own fees, so the school’s admissions page has the date and the sign-up link.

### Are there optional sections?

A school may add one optional test at the end, either Science (25 minutes) or Catholic Religion (20 minutes). Optional scores aren’t part of the overall HSPT score.

## What will a full practice test cost?

HSPT practice will cost $39/test or $19/mo. A full-length test is timed like the real one and has every answer explained; monthly practice includes every HSPT practice test and question set. Practice tests aren’t open yet. Join the waitlist and we’ll email you the day they open.
